Its Sunday, so today I’ve mostly been recovering from a hangover, tidying the flat and getting stuff ready for the working week.
I did, however, decide to take an hour or so out to rewatch Python’s life of Brian, personally I’m a Meaning of Life fanatic but it really is one of the sharpest lampoons out there on Religion, Cults and crowd dynamics.
There’s a scene in the film where Brian address’s a crowd of followers outside his house and they repeat every word they say – one of the lines is: ‘We are all Individuals.’ repeated word for word by the fanatical crowd.
I was at the start of the St Pauls Occupation last weekend – I was curious to see what the message and type of protest would be (You can read my thoughts on the protest here) On the opening day Julian Assange decided to show up and give a speech to the crowd where they also repeated every word he said, including a line saying ‘we are all individuals’ – for your viewing pleasure you can both speeches below.
Life of Assange
Life of Brian
Where does that leave Occupy LSX? I don’t know, but in the time honoured tradition of life imitating art I do know that Julian Assange is not the Messiah. He’s a very naughty boy.
